BELIEVER
Assistant & co-Editor | Feature Documentary
HBO Documentary Films | Live Nation Productions
Dir: Don Argott and Sheena Joyce
In the spring of 2017 I’d been working for a couple months as an archival editor for the upcoming feature doc Framing John Delorean by Don Argott and Sheena Joyce. I had just moved to Philadelphia and didn’t really know anybody in town. Somehow I stumbled into some of the best documentary filmmakers in the business.
That summer they started a new project, a film that would follow Imagine Dragons lead singer Dan Reynolds’ headfirst dive into LGBTQ activism in the Mormon community in Utah. Don and Sheena took a chance and asked me to assist and eventually co-edit the film with their long-time collaborator Demian Fenton.
It turned out to be one of the most meaningful experiences of my career, professionally and personally. By the end of the summer the film had been accepted to Sundance, and by the end of the year it had been picked up by HBO Documentary Films. Believer premiered at Sundance to a sold-out opening weekend crowd and wide acclaim. Later that year the Mormon Church reversed its policy on children of same-sex couples, in part due to the activism and pressure created by our film.
